Aalborg Fredsaktion (Peace Action) was formed in October 2001 in response to the then threat of war in Afghanistan. Sadly it didn’t stay a threat for long. The people of Aalborg were initially slightly bemused at our vigils and other activities, although not altogether unsupportive, but nobody wanted a war with Iraq and on the 15th of February over 3000 people – many of whom had never been in a demonstration before, young, old, families including one of four generations – took to the street to march to the British consulate to deliver a petition against going to war. I have never seen that many people on a demonstration in Aalborg before and I was deeply moved by so many and such varied voices speaking as one. Being part of that and knowing we were part of a world wide protest created an amazing feeling of solidarity.
