In London, it was bitterly cold. The Stop the War march moved forward so slowly, people around me were losing body heat rapidly, despite dancing on the spot to the rhythm of the nearest band in the crowd. People had to leave the route and shiver their way into shops for a while to warm up.

People were talking all the time, talking about peace, and truth, about lies, about how many people were marching, about the weather, about how hungry they were getting, and how we were never going to reach the end…
